Combat Sarcopenia with Protein

As people age, not only does their hearing and eyesight weaken, but the loss of muscle mass and the function of muscles decline. This is called Sarcopenia and it’s not commonly recognized or discussed.

Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia actually go hand in hand. Muscle prevents bone loss, especially if the muscles are worked out on a regular basis. This is because when muscles are strengthened, they put force on bones, which in turn force the body to produce more bone. Sarcopenia also causes one’s balance to be impaired which leads to more falls and bone breaks.

A diet full of protein is also proven helpful in preventing Sarcopenia. Doctors are recommending up to 100 grams of protein a day to maintain muscle mass and health. It’s noted that the quality and type of protein is important when trying to prevent muscle break down. Animal sourced protein has proven to be the best form. It’s full of nutrients and amino acids to make and maintain healthy muscle. Eggs, low fat dairy, and lean chicken and beef are great examples for meals.

Staying fit with resistance training and a healthy diet can protect you from this biological condition called Sarcopenia.
