Many aging people experience problems with their balance control increasing their risk of falling. These falls may have devastating effects because as we age, fractures are more likely and are often debilitating.
Here are some statistics on falls among adults 70 years and older:· 3 out of 10 fall each year.
· 2 out of 10 will need home health care after being hospitalized by a fall AND will fall again within the first month after coming home.
· 1 in 10 will suffer a broken bone, head injury or other serious injury from a fall.
· More than 90% of broken hips are caused by falls AND of those who break their hip, only about ½ will get around as they did before their fall.
· In the United States, up to 16% of all emergency room visits are for fall related incidences AND 7% of all hospitalizations are the result of a falling injury.
There are several risk factors that increase your likelihood of a fall. These include symptoms of health problems like difficulty walking or moving around. Also, having to take several medications can be a factor. Vision problems, foot problems, and
blood pressure issues can all contribute to falls.
Being aware of the risks is the first step toward the prevention of falls and fall related injury. Speak to your doctor about your medications to determine if some may be eliminated or reduced. Remove trip hazards and obstacles that may give you trouble. Maintain a healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise to reduce debilitation as you age. With knowledge and awareness, every risk factor of a fall can be reduced.
