Preventing Parkinson’s Through Exercise

The facts are clear. More than 15% of people age 65-74 will experience symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and once we reach age 75, the number of us experiencing symptoms will jump to 30%.

There is good news however. Recent research indicates that those who exercise regularly and vigorously may lower their risk of Parkinson’s disease by up to 40%. Of those who participated in a recent study at the Harvard School of Public Health, the participants who participated in intense aerobic exercises like running, swimming, tennis, and bicycling had a 40% reduced risk for Parkinson’s disease compared to those with a more sedentary lifestyle.

Other research has suggested that resistance training, along with a creatine supplement may improve the physical performance and activities of Parkinson patients thus improving their quality of life. Considering all the benefits of exercise we are already aware of, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to incorporate moderate exercise into your daily schedule!
